I Have Called Myself a Translator for Years

Playing overseas, my coach sat me down with Steve Nash film and showed how Nash used the referee lanes to create angles on the court. That was the moment I saw basketball as math in motion — lanes, spacing, geometry, decisions.

From then on, I have used sport to build curriculum, analytics tools, and games.

I have called myself a translator for years.

Not because I speak for data scientists or speak down to athletes. I use the word because much of my career has taken place between different basketball worlds.

I have been the player receiving information. I have trained young athletes trying to understand their development. I have worked with NBA teams on player-tendency and analytics questions. I have helped people around the game — including families of NBA players — understand what analytics mean and how they connect to development.

At the end of the day, analytics are tendencies. The numbers are accumulated evidence that help us see those patterns more clearly.

The tools have changed. The job has remained the same.

Turn complexity into understanding. Then turn understanding into action.

I wrote about this role in 2020, when I called Sportstechwest an analytics translator. The title was not a marketing line waiting for a trend. It was a description of the gap I kept seeing between measurement and meaning.

Sports is starting to talk more openly about that gap. Good. The need has been there longer than the language.


The Real Problem Is Not More Data

Organizations now have more dashboards, more automated clips, more sensor outputs, and more ways to grade a possession than most staffs can absorb in a week.

College programs also operate inside regulated time. Under NCAA Division I Bylaw 17.1.7.1, countable athletically related activities in the playing season are limited to a maximum of four hours per day and twenty hours per week. That constraint matters. Every film session, meeting, and tech walkthrough competes with practice, recovery, and the rest of a student-athlete’s life.

More information does not automatically produce more understanding.

Sometimes it produces longer meetings, conflicting interpretations, athlete confusion, and reports that never become a clear next action.

The missing piece is often day-to-day training — reps that teach people how to see a pattern and use it. Recognize the tendency. Then act on it.

Sports does not have a data shortage. It has a translation gap.


What BallCODE Is

BallCODE is how I turned that translation work into a system.

It uses basketball — stories, decisions, if/then choices — as the familiar language, then builds a bridge into analytics, logic, coding, and decision-making. The idea is simple: start where the learner is fluent, then carry them into something harder without stripping the intelligence out of the idea.

Coding, in that frame, is just thinking like a computer — breaking a task into clear steps. Sports needs people who can think in systems and then break those systems down so players can execute them.

We usually focus on younger players. The same skill matters for coaches and athletes at every level.


What a Translator Actually Does

A translator is not someone who makes analytics less intelligent.

A translator protects the intelligence while making its meaning usable for a specific audience.

An analyst may see a statistically meaningful pattern. A coach may see a tactical problem. A player may hear criticism.

The translator’s job is to preserve what is true while changing how it is communicated.

We are the mediators. We help decide which tendencies to focus on, what to look for, and how to say it in a simple, concise way about the game.

I call that skillset Hoop Tendency Expertise. Hoop Tendency Experts are players and hybrid staff who see patterns early and can explain them so athletes can act. BallCODE is the product side of the same mission. The skill and the product are related. They are not the same thing.

Coaches need tactical and developmental meaning. Players need clear cues and behaviors they can test. Analysts need confidence that the finding still holds after it has been translated.

That is not watering down analytics.

It is completing the work.


How the Translator Role Was Built

I did not arrive at this work from a single job title.

I played professional basketball outside the NBA. That experience matters because information feels different when you are the one who has to run it in a live possession. A number that looks clean on a slide can feel like noise if nobody connects it to your reads, your timing, or your role.

I moved into training and performance work with young athletes. There, the translation problem showed up again. Athletes will accept a metric as a score. They learn faster when someone explains what the measurement represents, why it matters, what behavior may have produced it, and what to work on next. Analytics should not function as a report card. It should function as a development map.

Before and alongside that work, I started with premier sports technology companies — from data entry to testing products — learning how tools actually get used inside basketball environments. Then I built models, read film with numbers beside it, and checked whether an insight still made sense when it reached the coach and player. Through BTE Analytics, that work moved into early innovation pilots with NBA teams.

The second beat came from the people around the game. In conversations with NBA-team personnel and other basketball experts, I kept seeing the same pattern: the number lands differently depending on who is listening. Analysts need confidence in the measurement. Coaches need basketball value. Players need a next action. Families and people close to athletes often come to me when someone says something about analytics that does not yet make sense in human language. Without translation, a chart can look like judgment instead of opportunity.

Each stage looked different on paper. The skill was the same.


A Practical Coaching Principle

Working memory is limited, and poorly organized instruction creates unnecessary load. Clearer direction helps. Film works best when coaches define its purpose and guide athletes toward what matters. Attention research points in a similar direction for motor skill — guidance, not a guarantee.

A focused observation.

A small number of relevant clips.

A follow-up measurement.

The exact number of clips will vary by athlete and situation. The larger principle is to reduce unnecessary information and make the intended action unmistakable.

Less footage. Clearer direction. Focused film and one actionable instruction beat a highlight dump that leaves everyone nodding and nobody changing.

Assistant coaches do not all need to become programmers or data scientists.

They need enough technological and analytical literacy to ask the right questions, recognize what matters, challenge misleading conclusions, translate output into basketball language, deliver it in a way that fits the athlete, and connect the message to practice and competition.

Technology will continue giving teams more footage, more measurements, and more ways to evaluate performance.

But information alone does not teach.

The future of sports will not belong only to the organizations with the most data. It will belong to the organizations that can turn that data into understanding — and that understanding into action.
